Even though "they" all say that e-books are a miniscule portion of the book industry, the sudden surge of e-reading devices makes one wonder. First the Amazon Kindle, then the Sony Reader, and now, Barnes & Noble is offering the Nook. What does all this mean if the niche isn't growing?
For one thing, this digital wave offers authors another variety of places to attract readers. Let's face it, if someone isn't going to plunk down $15.95 for your print book, doesn't it make sense to have a less expensive, easier-to-access alternative?
Back when e-books began to emerge, I was a doubter. I love the feel of a book in my hands, the way the paper sounds as the page is turned, the portability. But more than that, after a lifetime of near-sightedness, the idea of trying to relax and read a novel on the screen did NOT appeal! But that's just me (and perhaps many others like me), so I had to sit up and take notice when this digital idea began to grow. One can't ignore it, and grudgingly I allowed some of my novels to be published as Kindle books.
The amazing thing is: they are selling very well! And so when SmashWords appeared on the horizon, I jumped in. I can count on my novels being available in all formats, and probably in most e-book stores. Take a look at my page to see how professional and easy this is. Click on any title, and you see all the various forms for download, the pricing, a description, etc.
Regardless of how you publish your e-books, just be aware that this is the wave of the future and even us old die-hards need to join the crowd.
